I think there is no animal around who is capable of expressing joy or sadness with as few body parts as a dog.  Not an animal I build too often, but one who makes me smile upon my daily pounding.  I always start with an animal head, and this is where I find out that today my animal is trying to be a dog.  A long muzzle, a short snout or something in between, it is leaning toward a dog.  I build big noses, large and small ears and try them all on a simple and unassuming head to see where it is going.  The dog and his muzzle set up his character.  It can give him strength, purpose or just aide his curiosity and get him into trouble.  The muzzle, aided by his feet can do an immense amount of damage.
